Characteristics
Sepiolite, as a fiber mineral containing viscosity, has a mineral deposit texture with fibrous and altered structure which was formed by skarnization while granite penetrates into limestone parted lenticularly within hornfels.
It is a magnesium silicate hydrate of which the chemical formula is SiO2Mg8O(OH)4(OH2)48H2O (CAS63800-37-3).
Like other kinds of clay, it belongs to the group of phillosilicate.
Sepiolite is of such structured that two tetrahedral silicate layers are connected to each other by oxygen atoms on the octahedral magnesium atom layer discontinuously formed in the central part.
Because of this structure, sepiolite particles indicate the characteristic of fine fibrous structure.
Sepiolite is mined from the vallecas-vicalvaro sedimentary layer as the sediment of chemically formed substances after the water in the lake area was evaporated by the dry weather during the Tertiary Cenozoic era.
